Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about asme bpe tubing.

Engineering and procurement questions we hear most often. For project-specific guidance, send your application details via RFQ.

What makes BPE tubing different from A270?

BPE adds: tighter tolerance, controlled ferrite content (< 1%), electropolished interior, comprehensive documentation, dimensional inspection per BPE MT-9.

A270 is the food/dairy standard; BPE is the pharmaceutical/biotech standard. BPE costs more but is required for cGMP applications.

What is SF4 vs SF5 surface finish?

SF4: Ra ≤ 0.38 μm (15 μin), the standard EP finish for ASME BPE. SF5: Ra ≤ 0.25 μm (10 μin), mirror finish for ultra-high purity.

SF4 is sufficient for most pharma/biotech. SF5 typically specified for WFI, vaccine production, and ultra-clean applications.

What is DL grade and when is it needed?

DL = Delta-Ferrite controlled. Specifies ferrite content < 1.0% in 316L. Lower ferrite means better corrosion resistance and lower risk of rouging.

DL is standard for pharmaceutical applications and recommended for hot WFI systems where rouging is a concern.

What documentation is in a BPE package?

Full BPE package: 3.1 MTR with heat numbers, surface roughness report (multiple measurements per tube), passivation certificate, ferrite content report, dimensional inspection.

Optional additions: hydrotest certificate, helium leak test, BPE MT-9 inspection records, rouging baseline measurements.

How is BPE tubing protected during shipping?

BPE tubing ships with end caps to protect electropolished interior from contamination. Caps must remain in place until installation.

For critical service, request double-bagged or nitrogen-purged shipping. Inspect end caps on receipt — replace if damaged.

Can BPE tubing be welded with manual processes?

Manual TIG welding is permitted but orbital welding strongly recommended for BPE compliance. Orbital provides consistent weld quality and documentation.

For manual welds, full purging and qualified welder required. ASME BPE MT-9 acceptance criteria still apply. Document all manual welds.

What is the cost premium vs A270?

BPE tubing typically costs 40-80% more than A270 due to tighter tolerances, EP processing, and documentation. Costs higher for SF5 and DL grades.

For pharma/biotech, BPE is required and the premium is justified. For food/dairy, A270 standard is appropriate and cost-effective.
