What is sight glass used for?
Visual confirmation of process flow, fluid level, foam formation, color changes, particulate presence, and CIP cycle progress.
Strategic placement: after pumps to confirm priming, on tank outlets, on CIP return lines, after filters, and at sample points.
How fragile is borosilicate glass?
Borosilicate is durable but can break from thermal shock (>150°C change) or excessive bolt torque. Standard pressure rating provides good safety margin.
Always inspect for cracks/chips on assembly. Use cushion gasket (PTFE) between glass and metal. Tighten bolts gradually in cross pattern to specified torque.
Can sight glasses handle steam?
For SIP cycles, gradual warm-up required (no rapid steam injection). Standard sight glasses rated for 180°C continuous, 200°C peak.
For frequent SIP, specify toughened glass (DIN 8902) for better thermal shock resistance. Provide cycle temperature/frequency for selection.
What thermal shock limit applies?
Standard borosilicate: 150°C temperature change. Toughened: 250°C change. Exceeding these limits causes thermal stress fracture.
For CIP/SIP cycles, control temperature ramp rates. Pre-warm system before introducing hot CIP solutions.
Are there options with LED lighting?
Yes — integrated LED illumination (24V DC) available for enhanced viewing in dark processes or for video monitoring.
IP65/IP67 rated for washdown environments. ATEX-certified options for hazardous areas. Provide voltage and certification needs with RFQ.
What is the wiper option?
A mechanical wiper inside the sight glass clears product film/deposits for clear viewing. Useful for viscous, opaque or filming media.
Wiper operated manually via external knob. Constructed of PTFE or silicone for hygienic compatibility. Specify wiper material based on media.
What documentation is provided?
Standard: 3.1 MTR for body, glass certification, FDA compliance for seals, pressure test certificate.
Optional: thermal cycle test report, ATEX certification (LED option), full BPE package for pharmaceutical applications.
